Applied Visual Semiotics is a half theoretical and half practical first year introduction class. The overall objective of the class is the introduction to visual language. The theoretical knowledge of the students is verified in practice — by creating communicating images.

Theory:
The goal of the lectures is the presentation of the theoretical principles behind the semiotics of visual language in the objective of applying the acquired knowledge during the practical workshops.

Specific objectives:
‣ Presentation of the general semiotic principles behind visual language;
‣ Presentation of the concept of “vocabulary” of visual language;
‣ Presentation of the syntax principles behind visual language;
‣ Presentation of the semantic principles behind visual language;
‣ Presentation of the pragmatic principles behind visual language;
‣ Presentation of the conceptual rhetoric of visual language;
‣ Presentation of the formal rhetoric of visual language;
‣ Presentation of the elements of the creative process.

Practice:
The objective of the workshops is to apply the knowledge presented in the lectures. The workshops are organized around a series of practical exercises aimed at developing visual message.
